Rewind 2023

 

Hello everyone, it’s me again, Jas! I hope you all had a great time with your family and dear ones during the holiday season.

But before we move on in our daily lives, join me as I look back on a few of what happened in 2023.

Let me begin on 31 December 2022. It is the day when Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters passed at the age of 74 after losing her heroic battle with cancer. You can read more from here: The Passing of Anita Pointer

 

January 2023, we lost Fred White, the drummer of Earth Wind and Fire, without disclosing the cause of his death. He left us with unforgettable beats and grooves from their hits like September, Shining Star, Boogie Wonderland, and Let’s Groove. In April 2023, the American drummer Ralph Humphrey died. He played with Don Ellis Big Band and worked on several albums with Frank Zappa. On 19 February 2023, it was confirmed that he was receiving hospice care and spending quality time with his family. 18 April 2023, the news about Ralph Humphrey was still unconfirmed. It was followed by false rumors spreading fast over the internet about his passing. And, honestly and personally, as a person from another country who reads and watches the web to be updated on international news, I am still confused about when he really died. There is news that he passed away on the 18th (the day when the false rumor spread), some articles said it was the 23rd, and other news said it was the 25th of April 2023. Help! It will be greatly appreciated if someone from here can confirm Ralph Humphrey’s passing, please don’t hesitate to comment. Thank you very much in advance!

21 July 2023, the timeless jazzy crooner, Tony Bennett had passed. Just two weeks short of his birthday, Bennett passed away in his hometown in New York at the age of 96, with no given cause of death. In 2016, his wife confirmed that Bennett learned that he has Alzheimer’s, but despite all these, he continued to make music and perform. Want to read more? Also in July 2023, following the death of the Legendary Tony Bennett, another big name in the industry had died. On 26 July 2023, at the age of 56, Sinéad O’Connor died. According to reports, the “death is not being treated as suspicious”. Before her passing, she struggled with various mental health issues. On 27 September 2023, another great drummer, inspiration, author, motivator, and The Drumming’s Global Ambassador left the world. One of the well-known and respected figures in the world of drumming and music education Dom Famularo, lost his battle with stage 3 pancreatic cancer. His age was 70. On 30 October 2023, pop icons Usher and Ariana Grande’s drummer, Aaron Spears, passed away. He was 47 and no specific cause was stated. And from these legends who said their goodbyes, let’s move on to some positive vibes that happened in 2023.

 

Lenny Kravitz released TK421. It is the lead single of his forthcoming album Blue Electric Light to be released this March 2024. This is the follow-up to his 2018 album, Raise Vibration.

 

2 November 2023, with the help of an AI-backed audio restoration technology, the final Beatles’ song Now and Then was released. The song was considered to be the third Beatles reunion single after Free as a Bird, and Real Love.
