Canopus Drums history: Shinichi Usuda founded the Canopus Drums in 1977. Here is a concept of how they got the company’s name. Canopus is a shining reddish star in the Southern Hemisphere, and its brightness is only second to Sirius. This star is rarely seen in Japan. In ancient China, it is called “The Old Man of the South Pole” because it can only be seen occasionally in the low, boundless southern sky. From legend, the “Old Man of the South Pole” was considered to be a lucky star, people believed that they would live longer when they could see it. In several countries, fishermen would not sail when they see this unfamiliar star “as stormy seas would follow”. This tradition later changed and now believed that if they see the star, they will be protected from any misfortunes. They named the company Canopus to share the good luck of this star. They wish to develop their own unique brand to bring happiness to drummers.

Hayman Drums History: Hayman Drums started in the United Kingdom in 1968. It is the result of the innovation that Ivor Arbiter wanted. His original plan was to fit metal liners within the shells of beech Carlton drums. Though some drums were actually made, they soon discarded the metal inserts due to weight and expenses and chose to coat the drums’ interior surfaces (Vibrasonic) instead. And the load and extremely cutting drums were born! The drums were originally named George Hayman (one of the guys in Dallas-Arbiter’s Shoeburyness factory) and were eventually shortened to Hayman. The drums became the first choice for the loudest acts during the 1960s and 1970s. Despite being one of the famous drum companies during the 1960s, they discontinued manufacturing drums in 1975. After 35 years of rest, Hayman drums have been updated and redeveloped, with the tradition and innovation combined.

Simmons drums history: Simmons, a pioneering British electronic drum manufacturer, founded by Dave Simmons in 1978, revolutionized the music industry with its distinctive sound, showcased on countless 1980s albums. Notably, the SDS 5, developed with Richard James Burgess, garnered widespread acclaim, featuring prominently in recordings by renowned artists like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran. Simmons’ innovation stemmed from the collaboration between Burgess and himself, resulting in the creation of the world’s first fully electronic drum set, the SDS-V, in 1981. This iconic instrument, with its hexagonal pads and unique sounds, captivated musicians globally, influencing the music of the era.
Simmons’ product line continued to evolve, introducing models like the SDS-7 and SDS-800, catering to diverse drummer preferences. Despite initial success, Simmons faced challenges as musical trends shifted in the 1990s, leading to a decline in sales and eventual closure in 1999. However, the Simmons legacy endured through Guitar Center’s acquisition of the trademark, culminating in the relaunch of affordable electronic drum kits in 2005.
In 2017, Simmons announced the SD2000 series, marking a return to the forefront of electronic drum technology under Dave Simmons’ guidance. This modern iteration, featuring mesh heads and advanced sound capabilities, pays homage to its predecessors while embracing contemporary innovations, promising a new era of excellence in electronic percussion.
Staccato drums history: Established in 1977, Staccato Drums were created by inventor, designer, and artist, Pat Townshend. The drums were inspired by the painting he finished a year before it was created, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”. The drums work on what they call the “kadency” principle, in which “a volume of air projected through a controlled expanding space will have a great effect on tonal resonance, distribution, and power.” To meet this principle, Staccato shells were made from GRP (glass-reinforced plastic), quite thin, but stronger than steel. Staccatos were the world’s first and only asymmetrical drums. And because of their stunning looks with their thunderous sound, the Staccato drums have also been drawn into films, videos, and television. Pat Townshend died in 2011, but his sons continue the legacy of running the Staccato company and producing the Staccato drums.

Century History: Century drums were musical instruments sold in France in the 1990s. These entry-level kits were intended for beginners, offering an affordable option for those wanting to start learning drums. The shells were typically made from basswood, a wood commonly used for budget instruments. User reviews indicate that, while these drums were suitable for beginners, they had limitations in terms of sound quality and durability.
Century drums were often sold as complete kits, including cymbals and hardware. However, the components provided, especially the cymbals, were often of lower quality, which led users to replace them to improve the overall sound of the instrument.
Despite their limitations, these drum kits allowed many aspiring musicians to take their first steps in learning the drums without significant expense. Today, Century drums are no longer in production and are considered vintage instruments, sometimes sought after by collectors or those nostalgic for the 1990s.
