His health issues started in 2007 when he had a spinal injury that left him with severe nerve damage and limited mobility, complicating his ability to play the instrument. In a December 2024 interview, he revealed that he had been “very sick,” which has profoundly affected his ability to play music. He retired from drumming in 2022 due to severe nerve damage and a condition known as drop foot, resulting from back surgeries. These health issues have led him to perform seated during concerts, with his son Nic Collins taking over drumming duties during Genesis‘ final tour in 2022.

Despite these challenges, Collins has continued to engage with his musical legacy. In December 2024, a YouTube documentary titled “Phil Collins: Drummer First” was released, offering insights into his career and current health status. In the documentary, Collins candidly discusses the impact of his health on his ability to perform, stating, “Just feels so strange to hold a pair [of drumsticks].”
