Your posture on drums is very important, you mustn’t take bad habits otherwise you may get a backache or a tendinitis. A right posture allows an easy and rapid-paced playing on toms and cymbals.
Position on the seat
You must be sitting on the seat edge so as to have your thighs free, the angle between the thigh and the calf must be slightly higher than 90°.
You must have the snare drum between your knees. Adjust its height so that it is slightly above your thighs.
Position above the snare drum
You must be comfortable and place the tip of the sticks at the center of the snare drum. The angle between the sticks should be slightly lower than 90°.
Position on the bass drum pedal
The foot sole must be in contact with the pedal sole (mobile part) with your heel raised.
The leg will give the hit.
Position on the toms
Try to keep the same position of the sticks as on the snare drum (with the angle slightly lower than 90°).
This position will be the same on the floor tom.
Not like this !!
Position on the ride
The right hand must be perpendicular to the ground.
La main doit être perpendiculaire au sol.
This cymbal is played with the tip of the stick.
The ride dome is played at the left of the butterfly screw with the thicker part of the stick.
Position on the crash
Same position of the hand as on the ride.
The crash is played on the edge with the thicker part of the stick.
Position on the high hat and the snare drum
The high hat which is on the left is played with the right hand.
The sticks pass each other (keep the angle as above the snare drum).
The high hat is played on its edge (so as to get a finer sound) with the tip.
As people are different from one another, the position may vary according to constraints imposed by the equipment (bulky drums, worn-out pedals, etc.) or according to people’s preferences.
