Kottak‘s journey into the world of drumming began at an early age. Growing up in a musically inclined family, he was exposed to various genres of music, sparking a deep interest in rhythm. At the age of six, he received his first drum kit, setting the stage for a lifelong passion. His early influences ranged from classic rock bands like The Beatles to the heavy-hitting sounds of Led Zeppelin, laying the foundation for the diverse drumming style he would later develop.

In the early 1980s, Kottak embarked on his professional drumming career, initially joining a local Louisville band called Buster Brown. This early experience honed his skills and solidified his commitment to a life in music. However, it wasn’t until the late ’80s that he would achieve widespread recognition when he joined the German hard rock band Scorpions.

Kottak‘s tenure with Scorpions, which began in 1996, marked a significant chapter in his career. He replaced the band’s longtime drummer, Herman Rarebell, and quickly made his mark with his powerful and dynamic playing. His contributions to Scorpions included studio albums like “Pure Instinct” (1996), “Eye II Eye” (1999), and “Unbreakable” (2004). The album “Humanity: Hour I” (2007) showcased Kottak‘s versatility as he seamlessly adapted to the band’s evolving sound.

In addition to his role in Scorpions, Kottak participated in various side projects and collaborations. Beyond the music, Kottak faced personal challenges, including legal issues and a period of rehabilitation. However, he emerged from these trials with renewed vigor, and his resilience only added to the depth of his character.

In 2016, after two decades with Scorpions, Kottak was fired due to his alcoholism and departed from the band. He left behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and studio recordings.
