Early Life and Background

Sheila Escovedo, known as Sheila E., was born on December 12, 1957, in Oakland, California. Music was deeply rooted in her family. Her father, Pete Escovedo, is a well-known percussionist, and her uncles Alejandro, Coke, Mario, and Javier Escovedo were also accomplished musicians. Adding up, her godfather is the famous Tito Puente. Sheila grew up surrounded by Latin jazz, funk, and rock music, which shaped her passion for percussion.

Sheila began playing drums and percussion at a very young age. By the age of five, she had already decided that she wanted to become a musician after she gave her first public performance in front of 3000 audience with her dad. Sheila E.’s professional career began in earnest when she started collaborating with various artists, including Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and Herbie Hancock. Her big breakthrough came when she met Prince in the late 1970s. Also in the same year, she became a member of The George Duke Band.
