Released in 2009 on Levitate, “Cyclone” is one of Bruce Hornsby’s most distinctive collaborations, bringing together his sophisticated piano writing with the poetic imagination of Robert Hunter, the legendary lyricist associated with the Grateful Dead. For drum enthusiasts, the track is particularly rewarding because its relaxed, rolling rhythm gives Hornsby’s piano and Hunter’s reflective lyrics a strong but understated foundation.

The story began in 2008, when Hunter contacted Hornsby and asked him to send some music that might inspire lyrics. Hornsby found an unfinished piece among some old recordings. He felt that it had the timeless quality of a classic Grateful Dead song, with an atmosphere reminiscent of “Brokedown Palace.” Hornsby recorded the musical track and improvised a vocal melody over it, then sent it to Hunter. About two weeks later, Hunter returned lyrics written carefully to match Hornsby’s melody syllable by syllable. Hornsby has described the moment as almost magical: he immediately felt that the words and music belonged together.

The finished recording features Hornsby on piano and vocals, J.V. Collier on bass, Sonny Emory on drums, John Thomas on keyboards, Bobby Read on woodwinds, and Doug Derryberry and Blake Mills on guitars. For a drummer, Emory’s performance is especially interesting because he avoids turning the song into a conventional rock workout. At roughly 70 BPM, the track moves with an easy, spacious pulse. His playing works closely with Collier’s bass, creating a foundation that allows Hornsby’s piano lines to wander freely above it.

The drums also help reinforce the song’s central image. The “cyclone” becomes a metaphor for youthful energy, memory, power and the passage of time. Emory’s controlled playing gives the music movement without destroying its reflective character. The groove feels capable of building into something much larger, yet it remains restrained.

“Cyclone” was not simply a studio creation. Hornsby and the Noisemakers brought it onto the road, and it became a favorite among dedicated fans. In 2008, Hornsby performed the newly written song at the Ridgefield Playhouse before the Noisemakers joined him onstage. It later appeared in live form on Bride of the Noisemakers, a 2011 album documenting performances recorded between 2007 and 2009. Hornsby has continued to perform it, including solo versions in later concerts.

For drum fans, “Cyclone” is a lesson in restraint, interaction and atmosphere. Sonny Emory proves that powerful drumming does not always require explosive fills. Sometimes the drummer’s job is to create a current beneath the music—a steady rhythmic wind that allows the piano, bass and vocals to rise naturally. Like the cyclone described in the song, the groove has power, but its greatest strength is the way that power is controlled.
