Les Batteurs de Toto – Part 1

Toto vous manque ? Bonnes nouvelles! Le Dogz of Oz World Tour débutera en février 2022 ! Et bientôt, nous aurons à nouveau ce soi-disant «syndrome de la dernière chanson (SDC)» (où les gens ont tendance à chanter la dernière chanson que nous avons entendue lol). Alors, tout le monde chante… « J’entends la batterie résonner ce soir… » Attendez, et qui joue cette batterie la nuit ?!!! Chut, je suppose que ton voisin n’est pas d’accord avec ça 😉 …
Mais sérieusement, vous êtes-vous déjà demandé qui jouait de la batterie avec Toto surtout après le décès de Jeff Porcaro ? Et bien, voyons-les ici, des membres aux remplaçants, en passant par les batteurs de session et de tournée !
Oups, mais attendez, avant de continuer, voici un petit fait amusant avec la chanson Africa, Jeff et Joe Porcaro ont fait quelques boucles de percussions sur un marimba et des capsules de bouteilles pour recréer les sons que Jeff a entendus au New York World’s Fair en 1964 par les batteurs du pavillon africain. Soit dit en passant, Joe Porcaro est un batteur et percussionniste de jazz américain bien connu, et bien sûr, sans lui, il n’y aura pas de Jeff le batteur, Mike le bassiste et Steve le claviériste du groupe légendaire, Toto.

Les membres

OK prêt ? Commençons par l’original, l’homme principal, Jeff Porcaro, sans lui, il n’y aura pas de Toto. Au seul et unique choix personnel du groupe lorsque Jeff est parti pour de bon et a commencé à secouer le paradis, le brillant Simon Phillips. Et à un autre batteur talentueux qui a remplacé Simon lorsqu’il a quitté le groupe pour se concentrer sur sa carrière solo, Keith Carlock.

Jeff Porcaro (L’original, 1977-1992)

Pour faire le kick-start sur les batteurs de Toto, voici nul autre que “l’Homme au toucher doré”, Jeff Porcaro !
Rendu plus célèbre pour sa batterie sur la chanson primée aux Grammy Awards, Rosanna a créé le Half-Time Shuffle Groove, inspiré du “Purdie Shuffle” de Bernard Purdie et ajouté avec un peu d’art et de créativité de groove de John Bonham dans la chanson “Fool In The Rain” par Led Zeppelin.
Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro, le fils aîné du célèbre batteur et percussionniste de jazz américain, et d’origine italienne Joe Porcaro et sa femme Eileen, est né le 1er avril 1954. À l’âge de sept ans, Porcaro a commencé à jouer de la batterie et ses premières leçons ont été données par son père, Joe. Il a poursuivi ses études avec Richie Lepore et Bob Zimmitti.
Porcaro fait partie du groupe de tournée du duo américain pop, Sonny & Cher (le mari et la femme, Sonny Bono et Cher) à son très jeune âge de dix-sept ans. Cela a été considéré comme son premier concert professionnel. À cette époque, ses héros de batterie étaient Jim Keltner (Selon Howard Sounes , le biographe de Bob Dylan), et Jim Gordon le batteur d’Eric Clapton, du groupe de blues rock dans les années 1970, Derek and the Dominos, et était également un célèbre batteur de session à la fin des années 1960 et 1970.
Il était si talentueux qu’il avait déjà joué sur des centaines d’albums pendant ses vingt ans. A commencé avec Steely Dan, puis a tourné avec Boz Scaggs, puis a cofondé le groupe que nous connaissons tous maintenant en tant que groupe très célèbre, Toto.
En plus d’être le batteur du groupe Toto, il était aussi un in- musicien de studio très demandé. Il a collaboré avec de nombreux noms éminents de l’industrie musicale, dont George Benson, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Christopher Cross, Dire Straits, David Gilmour, Steely Dan, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Joe Walsh et bien d’autres !

Selon Richard Marx, il était le meilleur batteur avec qui il ait jamais travaillé, et il lui a même dédié la chanson “One Man”. Dans l’album de 1995 de Michael Jackson, HIStory : Past, Present and Future , Livre I, il a fait une dédicace dans les notes de pochette pour Porcaro.
Mais toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin. Le 5 août 1992, à l’âge de 38 ans, Jeff Porcaro meurt après une crise cardiaque causé par l’insecticide qu’il a pulvérisé. Selon un coroner, il a été déterminé que la crise cardiaque était la conséquence d’une maladie coronarienne occlusive causée par l’athérosclérose associée à la consommation de cocaïne. Mais selon le porte-parole du coroner du comté de Los Angeles, certains médecins ont traité Porcaro , la crise cardiaque a été causée par une réaction allergique due au pesticide inhalé qu’il a pulvérisé. Et aussi, selon son coéquipier Steve Lukather, Porcaro a l’habitude de fumer et il souffrait également d’une maladie cardiaque de longue date qui a contribué à sa mort.
“Notre amour ne s’arrête pas ici ; il vit pour toujours, sur les ailes du temps.”, Celles-ci ont été écrites sur son épitaphe à partir des paroles de Wings of Time de leur album Kingdom of Desire.

Simon Phillips (1992 – 2008, 2010-2014)

Le suivant est un autre batteur incroyable, alors sans plus tarder, mesdames et messieurs, voici Simon Phillips !
Le compositeur, auteur-compositeur, producteur de disques techniquement brillant et autodidacte, et bien sûr le batteur de jazz, de pop et de rock Simon Phillips est né le 6 février 1957. Il n’avait que douze ans lorsqu’il a commencé à jouer professionnellement avec le dixieland ou le groupe de jazz traditionnel dirigé par son père pendant 4 ans. Après la mort de son père, il a commencé à jouer de la pop et du rock. Il a ensuite trouvé un travail en tant que musicien de session pour les membres de la comédie musicale Jesus Christ Superstar. Dans les années 1970 et 1980, il a travaillé avec différents groupes de rock. En 1981, il forme un duo appelé Ph.D mais se sépare en 1983. Il enregistre également son premier album avec le groupe Protocol en 1989.
Jeff Porcaro aimait son style de batterie, c’est pourquoi il était le seul choix par Toto quand Porcaro est décédé. Il a officiellement rejoint le groupe après la tournée Kingdom of Desire. Il était avec Toto de 1992 à 2008 et de février 2010 à janvier 2014. Le dernier concert de Simon avec le groupe remonte à 2013 et il est parti l’année suivante pour se concentrer sur sa carrière solo. Simon Phillips est toujours actif jusqu’à présent, en fait, juste ce 4 Février 2022, il sort l’album Protocol V.

Keith Carlock (2014, joue sur le dernier album de Toto : XIV)

Lorsque Simon Phillips a quitté Toto pour se concentrer sur sa carrière solo, Keith Carlock l’a remplacé. Keith est un musicien américain né le 29 novembre 1971.
À la fin des années 1990, il a commencé à jouer avec Steely Dan. Il a également joué de la batterie avec James Taylor, Sting et John Mayer. En janvier 2014, il rejoint Toto et joue sur tous les morceaux de l’album Toto XIV. Il a également tourné avec le groupe en avril-mai 2014.
En 2009, il a remporté le prix du meilleur batteur pop, fusion et polyvalent dans le sondage des lecteurs de Modern Drummer. Il est également membre du Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. Toujours en 2009, il a sorti The Big Picture: Phrasing, Improvisation, Style, and Technique, un DVD pédagogique.
