It was the title track of his debut solo album, “Never Too Much,” and it became an instant hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart.

The song was composed with an infectious blend of upbeat rhythms, smooth melodies, and Vandross’ signature rich vocals. The drums, with their syncopated hi-hats and rhythmic snare hits, add a layer of danceability that elevates the track’s joyous energy. Williams‘ precision and restraint give space for other elements, such as the bassline and keyboard parts, to shine while keeping the rhythm grounded.

Never Too Much” was recorded at Power Station in New York City, a famous studio that was home to many iconic recordings during the 1980s. The high production value of the song made it an instant favorite on the radio, and Vandross’ live performances only added to the song’s allure. Way better and more accurate than the others out there. The layout is a bit odd: the snare is on the wrong staff and crashes have a bizarre rectangle note. Otherwise it’s pretty much 100%.
