“Chanson populaire,” also widely recognized by its famous refrain “Ça s’en va et ça revient,” is one of Claude François’ most memorable recordings. Released in 1973, the song has the kind of instantly recognizable rhythm and catchy melody that made Cloclo a master of French popular music. For a drummer, it is especially interesting because the arrangement depends heavily on a precise, energetic groove that keeps the song moving while leaving plenty of space for the vocal.

The story began with Nicolas Skorsky, who originally wrote “Chanson populaire” with another singer in mind: Ringo, then married to Sheila. Claude François happened to hear the demo and immediately recognized its potential. Although the song had not initially been intended for him, François wanted to record it and ultimately became its defining performer. The composition is credited to Nicolas Skorsky, Jean-Pierre Bourtayre and Claude François, with Bourtayre responsible for the arrangement and musical direction.

François was also particular about the lyrics. One line originally referred to “toi et moi mariés,” but he asked for it to be changed to “toi et moi amoureux.” The alteration reflected his desire to maintain the image he presented to his audience.

The recording process required some persistence. François first recorded a version at Studio CBE in Paris, but he was not satisfied with the result. He returned to the studio and recorded the definitive version on October 9, 1973, working with engineer Bernard Estardy. The orchestration was handled by Jean-Claude Petit, while the Fléchettes provided the backing vocals.

For a drum fan, the recording is a wonderful example of how rhythm can make a pop song unforgettable. The drums and percussion provide a firm, danceable foundation, working closely with the bass and orchestral arrangement. The groove is not about spectacular fills; instead, it is about consistency, accents and forward motion. The famous repeated refrain gives the drummer an ideal framework for reinforcing the song’s infectious pulse.

When “Chanson populaire” was released, it initially struggled to gain momentum. Everything changed after François performed it on the Carpentier television show on November 17, 1973. The exposure helped propel the song toward the top of the French charts in January and February 1974, eventually selling more than 600,000 copies.

For drummers, “Chanson populaire” remains a lesson in the power of the pocket: sometimes the most memorable rhythm is the one that makes an entire audience want to move.
