“Paranoid” is far more than Black Sabbath‘s signature song—it is one of the defining recordings in the history of heavy metal. Released in 1970 as the lead single and title track of the band’s second album, the song was famously written almost by accident. While recording at Regent Sound Studios in London, the band realized they needed one more track to complete the album. Guitarist Tony Iommi quickly came up with the now-iconic guitar riff, bassist Geezer Butler wrote lyrics exploring anxiety and emotional isolation, and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne improvised a vocal melody. Following its release, “Paranoid” immediately became the centerpiece of Black Sabbath‘s live performances. The band played it extensively during the Paranoid Tour in 1970 and 1971, performing throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America. It remained an essential part of every major tour, from the classic Ozzy Osbourne era to numerous reunion concerts, including their celebrated farewell tour, The End Tour (2016–2017).
