Released as the opening track on BCCIV in 2017, “Collide” announced that Black Country Communion had returned with renewed chemistry after several years apart. Rather than easing listeners back into the band’s sound, the song explodes from the first measure with a thunderous groove, driven by Jason Bonham’s unmistakable drumming. Keyboardist Derek Sherinian had not previously heard the material, so he built his organ and piano textures in real time while producer Kevin Shirley guided the performances. For drummers, however, “Collide” belongs to Jason Bonham. Carrying forward the legacy of his father, John Bonham, Jason never settles for imitation. His performance combines massive rock backbeats with subtle ghost notes, dynamic cymbal work, and perfectly placed fills that push the song without overwhelming it. His bass drum locks tightly with Glenn Hughes’ driving bass lines, creating a groove that feels both heavy and remarkably fluid. Every chorus opens wider because of Bonham‘s powerful accents, while the verses breathe with tasteful restraint.

One of the song’s greatest strengths is its natural feel. Rather than relying on heavily edited drum tracks, Bonham delivers a performance that sounds organic and alive. Tiny variations in dynamics and timing give the recording its human pulse, reminding listeners why classic rock recordings continue to inspire generations of musicians.

Although “Collide” was not released as a major concert staple before the band returned to touring, it became an important part of the BCCIV era, representing the group’s successful reunion after years of inactivity. The album was recorded in Los Angeles under producer Kevin Shirley and marked the band’s return to the stage with performances promoting the new record.

For fans of the drums, “Collide” is more than an album opener. It is a masterclass in classic hard-rock drumming, proving that Jason Bonham continues to honor his family’s legendary heritage while confidently forging his own powerful musical identity.
