Bass Drum WarmUp #4

Exercise 4 — Kick Drum 16th-Note Doubles as Pickups

In this 4th warm-up, the hi-hat plays steady 8th notes all the way through the bar, and the snare keeps the backbeat on 2 and 4.
The focus is on the kick drum, which plays two 16th-note strokes as a pickup on the “&-a” of beat 1 and again on the “&-a” of beat 3 (the last two 16ths of those beats).

This creates a really musical groove while training your foot to play fast doubles without rushing into the snare.

🎯 Goals

  • Build clean, even kick doubles (same timing, same sound)

  • Improve foot-to-hands coordination (kick double → snare backbeat)

  • Keep the groove steady and relaxed with the hi-hat

âś… Practice tip
Start around 50 BPM, count the subdivision “1 e & a”, and make sure the two kick notes sit perfectly on “&” and “a”. Increase tempo gradually only when it stays clean and controlled.
