Exercise 3 — Kick Drum 16th-Note Doubles Groove
This exercise is a 4/4 groove designed to build solid 16th-note kick doubles in a very musical context. The kick drum plays doubles (two close strokes) on every beat, while the hi-hat stays steady and the snare holds the backbeat on 2 and 4.
What makes it interesting is that on beats 2 and 4, the snare lands right on the first note of the kick double. This forces you to keep your foot stable and consistent, even when the hands are adding strong accents to the groove.
🎯 Goals
Strengthen your kick doubles (evenness, control, endurance)
Improve foot + hands coordination (especially on 2 and 4)
Keep the groove clean, relaxed, and locked to the metronome
âś… Practice tip
Start slow (around 50 BPM), count “1e&a”, and focus on clean execution first: both kick notes should sound even and be perfectly placed. Then increase the tempo gradually—without losing relaxation.
