Dubbed “The Last Beatles Song”, Now and Then was released as a double A-side single on 2 November 2023, and it is paired with the new mix of the band’s first single in 1962, Love Me Do. It will be included in the expanded re-issue of their 1973 compilation album, 1967 – 1970 (also known as the Blue album) which is set to release on 10 November 2023.
“Now and Then” was written and recorded by John Lennon as a solo piano home demo in 1977 but left unfinished. It was considered the third Beatles reunion single following “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love”.
With the help of an AI-backed audio restoration technology, they extracted Lennon’s voice from the demo. To complete and finalize the song, McCartney added lyrics, and with overdubs, they added guitar tracks by George Harrison from their 1995 sessions. Critics felt that the song “Now and Then” was fit to be The Beatles finale.
