“Eloise” isn’t just a dramatic pop song — it’s one of the most ambitious recordings of the 1960s, and even for fans of drums and rhythm, the way the percussion interacts with the song’s orchestration makes it stand out.

The song was written in 1968 by Paul Ryan for his twin brother Barry Ryan, who sang it. Paul had been inspired by a rough mix of “MacArthur Park” — then a big, lush, dramatic piece — and he set out to write something equally sweeping. He locked himself away and wrote Eloise in about three days.

Recording took place at IBC Studios in London late in the session with their mother, and because the song runs well over five minutes — unusually long for a single at the time — the band only had two takes to nail it. The arrangement is rich: orchestra, choir-like backing vocals, and a melodic vocal from Barry that moves between expressive urgency and theatrical drama. But underneath all this grandeur is a rhythm section that keeps everything grounded.

Although the exact session drummer isn’t as widely documented as the orchestral players, Eloise uses strong rhythmic drive and layered percussion to give the song momentum. The beat underpins the emotional arc, anchoring the orchestral swells with a steady pulse that makes the dramatic shifts feel intentional rather than chaotic. For a fan of the drums, it’s a great example of how rhythm can stabilize a big arrangement — the drums don’t stand out like a solo, but they sit right in the pocket, giving every measure purpose and forward motion.

Once released, Eloise became a massive international hit — selling millions of copies and hitting the top of the charts in France while reaching the upper tiers in the UK and around the world. Barry Ryan would go on to feature it in live appearances throughout his touring career, often as a centerpiece because of its passionate intensity and dramatic flair. Performing it live demanded a tight interplay between the rhythm section and the dramatic vocal — the drums especially had to lock in with the orchestra or band every time to maintain the song’s shifting moods.

Eloise also inspired many covers — from French pop versions by artists like Claude François to rock interpretations by bands like The Damned in the 1980s — each bringing their own rhythmic approach.

For drummers, Eloise is a reminder that a song’s power often lies not in flashy fills but in the way the rhythm supports dramatic storytelling — grounding expansive musical ideas while allowing the emotion to soar.
