Fury” is one of Muse’s darkest, most intense creations—a track recorded during the sessions for Absolution (2003) but released only as a bonus track. Despite its “hidden” status, it has become a cult favorite, especially among fans who appreciate the raw power of Dominic Howard’s drumming, which forms the thunderous heart of the song.

The story of “Fury” begins in the early Absolution writing period, when the band was exploring themes of oppression, paranoia, and inner conflict. Matthew Bellamy brought in the first version: a brooding bass synth line and a haunting vocal melody inspired by Nine Inch Nails–style industrial rock. But the song only took full shape when Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme began experimenting with rhythm and texture. The band was fascinated by blending electronic tension with organic explosiveness, and Howard’s drums became the perfect tool for that.

During the recording sessions in London and Ireland, the group worked through multiple rhythmic approaches. The version they kept featured a massive, pounding drum pattern—a hybrid between industrial stomp and live rock fury. Howard used deep, roomy toms and a snare tuned for aggression, giving each hit a satisfying punch. His groove is deceptively simple but incredibly physical, building tension underneath the synth bass and distorted vocals. The signature fill before the final chorus—a sharp, tumbling break across the toms—remains one of the most beloved drum moments among fans of Muse’s heavier sound.

Although “Fury” didn’t make the main Absolution album due to its dark tone and the group’s desire for balance, they kept it as a special track for fans. And fans responded. When Muse performed “Fury” live, the song became even more intense. It appeared during the Absolution Tour and resurfaced occasionally in later years, especially when fans demanded deeper cuts. On stage, Howard played the drum part with even more force, driving the song into near-industrial territory. His live cymbal crashes were heavier, and the toms more resonant, giving the song a physical presence that the studio version only hints at.

Fury” has since earned a reputation as one of Muse’s greatest B-sides, a track where the emotional weight, production grit, and especially Dominic Howard’s powerful, primal drumming combine into something unforgettable. For drum enthusiasts, it’s a perfect example of how rhythm can transform a dark synth-rock idea into a full, explosive musical experience.
