When Annie Lennox stepped into the studio to create her debut solo album, Diva, she faced the challenge of proving that she could thrive outside of Eurythmics. One of the songs that best captured her confidence and creativity was “Precious,” released in 1992 as the album’s second single. Written entirely by Lennox and produced by Stephen Lipson, the song was recorded at Mayfair Studios and The Church Studios in London. Rather than recreating the synth-heavy sound that had made Eurythmics famous, Lennox and Lipson crafted a vibrant blend of funk, pop, and soul, giving “Precious” a fresh identity built around an irresistible groove.

Although listeners have interpreted the lyrics in different ways over the years, many critics viewed “Precious” as a deeply personal celebration of Lennox‘s young daughter, expressing how motherhood had transformed her life and softened past disappointments. Instead of relying on dramatic production, the song thrives on rhythmic interplay, layered keyboards, tasteful horns, and a warm bass line that allows Lennox‘s expressive voice to soar effortlessly above the arrangement.

For drummers, however, “Precious” offers an entirely different kind of enjoyment. The drum performance is wonderfully restrained, locking tightly with the bass to create a relaxed but infectious pocket. Rather than filling every available space, the drummer lets the groove breathe, using crisp hi-hat work, steady snare accents, and subtle ghost notes to propel the song forward. Every beat serves the music, demonstrating that great drumming isn’t always about speed or complexity—it is about feel, consistency, and musical taste. The rhythm section provides the perfect foundation for Lennox‘s soulful vocal performance, making the song impossible not to move along with.

Precious” became a regular feature during the promotional campaign for Diva. Lennox performed it on several television appearances across Europe and included it in concerts during her early solo touring, most notably on the 1992–1993 Diva Tour. Live, the song often took on even more energy, with the band stretching the groove and allowing the rhythm section to shine. The live arrangements emphasized the funky character of the studio recording, giving audiences another reason to appreciate its infectious pulse.

More than three decades later, “Precious” remains one of the hidden gems in Annie Lennox‘s catalog. While songs like “Why” and “Walking on Broken Glass” often receive more attention, “Precious” continues to reward careful listening—especially for drum enthusiasts. Its elegant groove, impeccable musicianship, and perfectly balanced rhythm section are reminders that sometimes the most memorable drum parts are those that quietly make every other instrument sound even better.
