“Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross, released in 1981, marked a breakthrough for the legendary R&B singer, solidifying his place in music history. Vandross wrote and produced the song himself, showcasing his talent not only as a vocalist but also as a composer and arranger. It was the title track of his debut solo album, “Never Too Much,” and it became an instant hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart.
The song was composed with an infectious blend of upbeat rhythms, smooth melodies, and Vandross’ signature rich vocals. Vandross wrote the song with an emphasis on feel-good energy, crafting lyrics that conveyed joy, love, and positivity. The hook, “I can’t fool myself, I don’t want nobody else to ever love me,” instantly became memorable, adding to the song’s charm.
In terms of composition, “Never Too Much” was born out of Vandross’ experiences as a session singer, where he had developed a deep understanding of how to construct captivating arrangements. He worked closely with an elite group of session musicians, bringing a soulful, groove-driven vibe to life. The song’s lush production was powered by a tight rhythm section that became a central component of its success.
The drums in “Never Too Much,” played by Buddy Williams, provide a smooth and steady backbone to the song. Williams‘ playing is crisp, driving the groove with a tight pocket that makes the song feel lively without overwhelming Vandross’ vocal performance. The drums, with their syncopated hi-hats and rhythmic snare hits, add a layer of danceability that elevates the track’s joyous energy. Williams‘ precision and restraint give space for other elements, such as the bassline and keyboard parts, to shine while keeping the rhythm grounded.
“Never Too Much” was recorded at Power Station in New York City, a famous studio that was home to many iconic recordings during the 1980s. The high production value of the song made it an instant favorite on the radio, and Vandross’ live performances only added to the song’s allure. Vandross would often perform “Never Too Much” in concert, where it quickly became a fan favorite. The song’s irresistible beat and dynamic arrangement made it a centerpiece of his shows, with the drums playing an essential role in captivating audiences.

Way better and more accurate than the others out there. The layout is a bit odd: the snare is on the wrong staff and crashes have a bizarre rectangle note. Otherwise it’s pretty much 100%.

Hi Jamie,
thank you for your review. The snare is on the right staff. It’s the European way to write the drum sheets.
