Bundle Drum Sheet Easy – Amy Winehouse – Rehab

Few modern songs have announced an artist’s arrival quite like “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse. Released in 2006 as the lead single from Back to Black, the song transformed Amy from a critically acclaimed British singer-songwriter into an international star. Its unforgettable hook, sharp lyrics, and retro soul production made it an instant classic. For drummers, however, “Rehab” offers something equally compelling: a perfectly crafted groove that channels the spirit of the Motown era while sounding fresh and contemporary.

The story behind “Rehab” is famously personal. Amy wrote the song after her management encouraged her to enter a rehabilitation program following concerns about her drinking. Instead of accepting the advice, she responded with the now-iconic phrase, “They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, ‘No, no, no.’” She later brought the idea to producer Mark Ronson, who immediately recognized its potential. According to Ronson, Amy sang the chorus almost exactly as it appears on the finished recording during their very first writing session. Inspired by the honesty of her lyrics, Ronson built the arrangement around her melody, drawing heavily from the sound of 1960s soul records by artists such as The Shangri-Las and Motown legends.

The recording sessions took place at Daptone Studios in Brooklyn, New York, where Ronson enlisted members of The Dap-Kings, the renowned backing band for Sharon Jones. Their vintage instruments and recording techniques gave “Rehab” its warm, analog sound. The drums, played by Homer Steinweiss, are central to the song’s identity. Rather than filling every measure with elaborate patterns, Steinweiss delivers a punchy, swinging groove full of crisp snare hits, tight hi-hat work, and subtle ghost notes. His performance captures the feel of classic soul drumming while leaving plenty of space for Amy‘s powerful vocals. Every backbeat lands with confidence, proving that great drumming is often about feel, consistency, and impeccable timing rather than complexity.

Following its release, “Rehab” became the centerpiece of Amy Winehouse‘s live performances. She performed it throughout the Back to Black tour in 2007, including memorable concerts at London’s Porchester Hall, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, the Glastonbury Festival, the iTunes Festival, and festivals across Europe and North America. The live arrangements remained faithful to the original groove, allowing the rhythm section to recreate the infectious energy that made the studio version so memorable.

Today, “Rehab” remains one of the defining songs of the twenty-first century. For fans of drumming, it is a masterclass in vintage-inspired groove. Homer Steinweiss demonstrates how precision, dynamics, and tasteful restraint can elevate a song into a timeless recording, making “Rehab” as rewarding to study behind the drum kit as it is to enjoy as a listener.
