Released on Absolution (2003), The Small Print is one of Muse’s most aggressive and high-energy tracks, blending elements of hard rock and alternative with a relentless rhythm section. Originally, the song was known as Action Faust, hinting at its lyrical themes of a Faustian bargain—a deal with the devil. The final title, The Small Print, alludes to the fine details of such a contract, where the true cost of ambition and power is hidden.

When composing The Small Print, Muse experimented with different arrangements. Early versions featured a more intricate riff-driven intro before settling on the blistering pace that defines the final recording. Dominic Howard’s drumming is the backbone of the track, driving its chaotic energy with machine-gun-like snare rolls, rapid-fire fills, and thunderous cymbal crashes. His playing is particularly notable for its urgency, pushing the song forward with a mix of punk-like intensity and precise control.

The drums were recorded in a way that emphasized raw power, with a tight, punchy snare and a fast-paced kick pattern that maintains tension throughout. The fills between verse and chorus sections add to the song’s frantic feel, while Howard’s use of open hi-hats gives the track a sense of unrelenting motion. Muse performed The Small Print extensively during the Absolution tour in 2003–2004. It became a fan favorite for its explosive energy, particularly in festival settings where the band thrived on high-adrenaline moments. Howard’s live drumming often featured slight variations, with added fills and extra cymbal crashes to heighten the intensity. The song was played at major gigs such as Glastonbury 2004 and Earls Court, where Muse delivered legendary performances.

However, as Muse’s setlists evolved, The Small Print was gradually phased out, last appearing in 2008. Despite this, the track remains a cult favorite among fans, particularly those who appreciate the sheer force of Howard’s drumming.
